They can follow multi-step instructions, handle hot-glue-level projects with a supervisor, lose a game and mean the “good play” compliment, and sustain a build across several days. The trap at this age is over-scheduling: unstructured time is still where creativity compounds. The ideas below work as anchor activities — one or two a week, with free play filling the rest.
Spaghetti tower challenge
You need: dry spaghetti, marshmallows, tape measure · 30 min
The classic engineering warm-up: build the tallest freestanding tower in twenty minutes. Start with triangles-versus-squares as a hint, then step back. Debrief like a design firm: what held, what collapsed, what would you try first next time? Failure analysis is the actual lesson; the marshmallows are just bribes.
Family strategy night
You need: a strategy board game or chess, a bracket chart on paper
Run a three-week family league with a drawn bracket and an actual trophy (a painted rock is fine). School-agers thrive on gentle metagames: tracking wins, designing team crests, writing match reports. Stop-motion studio
You need: any tablet or phone with a free stop-motion app, toys, lamp
Clay figures or LEGO minifigures plus a steady camera equals a movie studio. Ten frames make a two-second gag; kids quickly learn planning (storyboard three scenes), patience (tiny moves between shots) and editing. Kitchen science lab

School-age is when easy science experiments hit full power: cabbage juice pH indicators, invisible ink from lemon juice, density towers of sugar syrup in rainbow layers. Give your child a “lab notebook” — hypothesis, observation, conclusion — and watch the scientist posture appear. Prediction first, always: “what do you think will happen?” is the whole scientific method in six words.
The long build
You need: cardboard, tape, string, a week of evenings
Multi-day projects — a marble run along the staircase, a birdhouse from a kit, a model city, a working paddle boat — teach the rarest skill of all: finishing. Break the project into labeled stages on the fridge (Design, Gather, Build, Test, Decorate, Premiere). The premiere matters: a family viewing, a photo, a spot on the shelf.
Coding unplugged
You need: paper, a stack of cups, a patient sibling or parent
Write “programs” of arrows and symbols to move a toy through a grid, or instruct a “robot” parent to make a sandwich using only literal commands (“pick up knife” — parent picks it up with feet, because nobody said hands). Computational thinking without a screen: sequencing, debugging, precision of language.
Backyard Olympics
You need: chalk, beanbags, a stopwatch, imagination
Design events, draw the field, make scoreboards, invent opening ceremonies. Measuring throws, timing sprints and averaging scores sneaks in arithmetic; hosting builds leadership. Team variants and more in outdoor games.
Grown-up tip: resist fixing. When the tower falls or the boat sinks, the pause before you speak is where resilience grows. Ask “what would you change?” before offering anything. Reading grows up
This is the decade of chapter books, comics, joke collections and fact-database reading (“all sharks, all afternoon”).
